R. K. G. Menon (Cutlet)
The Blackbuck contains the collected research and writings of R. K. G. Menon (12 March 1929 – 26 December 2008), an ethologist and naturalist who carried out pioneering studies on the behaviour of this endangered antelope. A founder of the Madras Naturalists’ Society, Menon (famously known as Cutlet to all his friends) was a keen observer of animal behaviour and a self-made man to the hilt.
Although Cutlet wrote many papers and articles chronicling his observations and expounding on his interests, his main research on blackbuck based on over a thousand hours of observation across three years, runs into reams of hand-written and typed drafts prepared in the early and mid 1980s. Much of this has remained unpublished (until now) and some manuscripts are probably lost for ever.
What remains is made available here for reference by biologists, naturalists, those interested in animal behaviour, and anyone else who would like to see and understand the fascinating world of blackbuck through the eyes of Cutlet.
